Office Cleaning vs. Home Cleaning: What's Different?

Many assume it's the same job at a different scale. It isn't. Here's what makes commercial cleaning a completely different discipline.

At Silver Brush, we've spent eight years testing every cleaning method imaginable. The eco-friendly ones used to be an afterthought — pleasant if they worked, but rarely as effective as the chemical alternatives. That's changed. Here are the five green methods that have genuinely earned a permanent place in our professional kits.

The Takeaway
Want a professional clean?

Let our team handle it. Eco-friendly, reliable, and always spotless.

1. White Vinegar & Water — the all-surface staple

A 1:1 solution of distilled white vinegar and water is our most-used spray. It cuts through grease, deodorises, and leaves glass streak-free. The smell dissipates within minutes — contrary to what most people expect. Use it on benchtops, sinks, taps, and stovetops.

What to avoid: Don't use vinegar on natural stone (marble, granite) — the acidity will etch the surface. For stone, plain warm water or a pH-neutral stone cleaner is best.

“The best cleaning product is the one that works without leaving anything harmful behind — for your family, your surfaces, or the planet.”

2. Baking Soda Paste — for stubborn grime

Mix baking soda with just enough water to form a thick paste. Apply to grout lines, oven interiors, and tile surfaces. Leave for 10–15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush. The mild abrasion lifts stains that sprays simply can't penetrate.

Combine with a splash of vinegar for a fizzing reaction that helps loosen particularly heavy build-up in drains and oven racks.

3. Steam Cleaning — heat does the heavy lifting

A quality handheld steam cleaner uses nothing but water, yet sanitises surfaces to a hospital-grade standard. It's our go-to for bathroom tiles, kitchen hobs, and upholstery — anywhere you'd previously have reached for a disinfectant spray. The steam penetrates pores in surfaces and kills 99.9% of bacteria on contact.

Pro tip from our team

Always fill your steam cleaner with distilled water, not tap water. Tap water mineral deposits will clog the unit over time and shorten its lifespan significantly.

5. Essential Oil Refresh — scent without chemicals

Add 10–15 drops of tea tree, lavender, or eucalyptus oil to your vinegar spray for a natural fragrance and an antimicrobial boost. Tea tree in particular has well-documented antibacterial and antifungal properties — it's not just a pleasant scent.

For a standalone room freshener, combine water and 20 drops of your chosen oil in a small spray bottle. Spritz onto soft furnishings and carpets after cleaning for a lasting freshness that doesn't come from synthetic perfume chemicals.

The Takeaway

Green cleaning doesn't mean compromising on results — it means choosing methods smart enough to work without the side effects. The five above have been through thousands of Silver Brush cleans. They're what our professional team uses. They're what we'd use in our own homes. And they're a great place to start.

If you'd like to see them in action, our team is always happy to demonstrate during a clean. Book a session and ask for an eco clean.
